father-louis In May of 2009, Pope Benedict said in his homily during an outdoor Mass below the Mount of Olives, "Those who love Jerusalem want to see the city as a prophecy and promise of that universal reconciliation and peace which God desires for the whole human family." To be in Jerusalem and be part of the reconciliation and peace, which God desires for the whole of humanity, is our prayer and a beautiful reason for us to visit the Holy Land.jerusalem

Holy to Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike, the alluring city of Jerusalem has withstood the adversities of myriad wars and conflicts only to emerge today as a thriving center rich in history, religion and culture. In his final days Jesus stayed in Jerusalem and the villages surrounding it. He prayed on the Mount of Olives and taught in the temple. Here he was crucified. From the Mount of Olives he ascended into heaven with the promise to come again. church-annunciation

The Church of the Annunciation is said to be built over the place where Gabriel appeared to Mary. It is one of the largest and most magnificent churches in the Holy Land. The new structure, dedicated in 1969, is built on two levels in order to integrate and preserve the ancient site.
chapel-st-jeromeFrom a cave beneath the Church of the Nativity came the most enduring version of the Bible ever translated. In this underground study, St. Jerome spent 30 years translating the Scriptures from Hebrew and Greek into Latin. The text he produced was the first official vernacular version of the Bible. Known as the Vulgate, it remained the authoritative version for Catholics until the 20th century. St Jerome spent more than 36 years in the Holy Land. He was well known for his ascetic lifestyle and his passionate involvement in doctrinal controversies.

At the foot of the Mount of Olives stood the garden of Gethsemane. Jesus knew Gethsemane well because he often met there with his disciples.

Visitors to of the Garden of Gethsemane are amazed when they learn that the gnarled olive trees they see could have been young saplings when Jesus came here with the disciples on that fateful night after the Last Supper. In Jesus' time this would have been an olive grove where an olive-oil press — gethsemane in Greek — was located.
